Your own mud-brick escape in the quiet Yarra Valley countryside

Everybody falls in love with The Burrow – it invites you to take your foot off the pedal, sink into a chair and breathe. The minute you walk through the door, you'll be captivated by the view of the billabong. A stay at Wombat Bend is just what you need after the year you’ve had…

You’ll be the only guests here, surrounded by mother nature, a life-giving billabong and its birdlife, endless fresh air to breathe, a bookcase of great reads to lose yourself in, and best of all, a fire-pit at night to toast marshmallows over.

Wombat Bend is a favourite with freelancers, writer and artists, as you are the only guests on the property and have 5-acres of native Australian gardens to yourself, to explore during breaks.

The property is a haven for birds and wildlife and the sounds of the bush at night are magical. The crickets, cicadas and frogs in summer, and the glorious warbling magpies in winter on a clear moonlit night are unforgettable. The fire pit outside your Burrow is the perfect spot to sit and toast marshmallows as you let your eyes adjust to dusk and acquaint yourself with all the residents.

Each day you can work from somewhere new, from the desk or dining table inside your accommodation, out on the veranda overlooking the billabong, by the banks of the water, or simply wherever there’s a shady spot to throw down a cushion or take a chair.

The wifi signal is all yours, and there are books and DVDs for when you want to be distracted. Generous breakfast provisions are provided which keep most people going for a few days.  Wombat Bend offers that wonderful combination of allowing you to be undisturbed and ‘away from it all’, yet perfectly close to wineries, cafes, restaurants, galleries, gardens, bush walks and bike rides when you want them.

Alowyn Gardens is less than a five-minute drive from your accommodation and is another world you can immerse yourself in – especially if you love formal gardens and gardening. It also serves great coffee in a charming courtyard surrounded by a plant nursery. Dixons Creek Cafe does great dine-in or take-away meals and is literally over the hill from us. And De Bortoli winery and restaurant are two minutes further away, for a great wine tasting or Italian dining experience.

TarraWarra Museum of Art is an absolute local gem and houses one of Australia’s largest private collections of Modern Art in an architecturally stunning curved gallery. On the same property is Tarra Warra Estate winery and restaurant – where you can feast on a sustainable and delicious meal cooked by award-winning plant-based chef Mark Ebbels and have a guided wine tasting in their hobbit style cellar door built into the side of a hill.
